What are hidden fences and how do they work?
A hidden pet fence (also known as a dog fence or an electronic pet fence) is a training tool that quickly and effectively teaches pets the limits of their boundaries. Some hidden fences are made for outdoor use, such as keeping pets in the yard, protecting expensive landscaping, or keeping pets out of a swimming pool. Other hidden fences are made for indoor use, such as keeping pets out of specific rooms (like a nursery) or off of kitchen counters.

Installing a hidden fence is a three-part process that is not unlike installing a sprinkler or outdoor lighting system. The level of difficulty depends on your familiarity with using power tools and installing electronic equipment, your ability or willingness to perform heavy labor, and your proficiency with dog training.
- Installing the wire: To ensure safety and effectiveness, hidden fencing wire should be buried approximately 2-6 inches underground. Otherwise, the wire is left unprotected from damage by the elements and roving animals. As you can probably imagine, a hidden fence with damaged wire is a hidden fence that doesn’t work.
Good Dog Austin uses professional-grade tools on every job to produce a fence that is truly hidden.
- Installing the hardware: All pet containment systems consist of two primary objects: a receiver that is worn on a collar around the pet’s neck and an electronic transmitter that must be mounted indoors to protect it from the elements. Wire is buried outdoors to create the desired boundary and is then connected to the transmitter. Some systems also include a specialized lightning protector that must be separately installed.
- Training your dog: Good training is an essential component of the pet fence experience. Though it sounds like the easy approach, you can’t just install a hidden fence, put a collar on your pet, stick him in the backyard, and expect the hidden fence to keep him there. Hidden fences simply don’t work that way.
A hidden fence is a training aid. It uses audible tones and variable levels of static correction to teach a pet where his boundaries begin and end. It generally takes about one week of interaction with the pet and one week of supervision to ensure a pet is properly trained. Without adequate training, your pet will not understand how to respect his new boundary, which can result in fear and/or bolting.
